Dengue Fever in Pakistan: Symptoms to Watch For This Season

Dengue fever is a recurring concern across much of Pakistan, particularly during and after the monsoon season when mosquito populations increase. Knowing the early signs can make a real difference in how quickly you get appropriate care.

The illness typically starts with a sudden high fever, often accompanied by a severe headache, particularly behind the eyes. This is usually followed by muscle and joint pain intense enough that dengue is sometimes referred to informally as breakbone fever.

Other common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and general fatigue that feels more severe than a typical cold or flu. Some people also notice mild bleeding, such as bruising easily or bleeding gums.

Most dengue cases are manageable with rest, fluids, and monitoring, but a small percentage of cases can become more serious. Warning signs that need urgent in-person medical attention include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, extreme fatigue or restlessness, and cold or clammy skin.

If you have a fever during dengue season and are unsure whether it is dengue, a chat or video consultation with a general physician is a reasonable first step. They can advise on what symptoms to monitor and whether in-person testing is needed, without you needing to visit a clinic just to ask that initial question.

Prevention remains the best defense. Removing standing water around your home, using mosquito repellent, and wearing long sleeves during peak mosquito hours all meaningfully reduce risk during the season.

If you or a family member develop any of the warning signs mentioned above, do not wait for an online consultation, go to the nearest hospital directly.
